What is Patriam: The Sagas of War?

Patriam: The Sagas of War is a fresh take on the Real-Time Strategy genre in which players are plunged into the brutal wars that have come to shape the world of Patriam.

Although inspired by more traditional "historical RTS" games, The Sagas of War diverges by putting tactics first; dynamic environments, such as muddy fields, flooded rivers, and changing seasons transform each and every battle, push players to adapt on the fly.

From large-scale battles with hundreds of units, to small ambushes and skirmishes, The Sagas of War encourages players to think tactically about the placement and movement of their troops, and with each civilisation offering a unique playstyle, players are able to formulate radically different strategies, keeping gameplay fresh and engaging.

Campaigns

Patriam: The Sagas of War seeks to explore the vast and expansive lands, cultures, and histories of Patriam through the lens of heroic legends and violent conflict; campaigns will primarily focus on a singular character or group of characters which the players must lead to victory through a series of gripping character-focused missions, accompanied by cinematic cutscenes to tell captivating and legendary stories for all to enjoy.

Each campaign mission encourages the player to explore various strategies and civilisations in order to overcome complex and entertaining primary and secondary objectives, while the campaign as a whole tells an overarching story with a central theme.

The first campaign to release with The Sagas of War will focus on the early days of the War of The Five Nations, exploring the bitter rivalry between the Pacisian Rebel-King, Oustarn of Pacis, and the legendary Prince Anathaen of Thenithria; both of whom struggle for dominance over the Northern Kallonian continent.

The Rally of The Nine Banners

The Rally of The Nine Banners is the first campaign in Patriam: The Sagas of War.

You play as King Oustarn of Pacis, a rebel nobleman who has taken-up arms against the powerful and tyrannical Kingdom of Thenithria, who has ruled your family's ancestral home of Pacis for centuries.

Although, educated at Thenithria's elite military academy, a taste of Thenithrian brutality and cruelty soured a young Oustarn against Thenithria.

Now, with the sacking and pillaging of Northern Kallonian villages by Thenithrian soldiers as their Kingdom beings to crumble to dust, Oustarn of Pacis attempts to rally the various lords and nobles of Northern Kallonia against Thenithria in a grand Coalition.

But another threat from the north looms over Northern Kallonia, and Oustarn may yet find an uneasy alliance to aid him in his rebellion.

The Teihyo of Kaifenjao

The Teihyo of Kaifenjao is the second campaign in Patriam: The Sagas of War.

Beginning with the Teikihyo Rebellion at the end of the Dokakujin Era in Wurtum, you play as Teihyo Kyodankai, the Teihyo (Imperial General) of Kaifenjao and newly-appointed commander of all military forces loyal to The Kaikanjei Dynasty.

Rallying forces to your banner, you must swiftly march across Wurtum to confront the rebel Lord Kyokudai Teikihyo and destroy his strongholds in Northern Wurtum.

Following successive victories against Teikihyo, Kyodankai prepares for a final assault against Lord Teikihyo.

However, before the final assault can begin, Kyokudai Teikihyo is mysteriously murdered and Kyodankai is swiftly ordered back south to deal with the emergent Ishikiro Imoji who has proclaimed the rival Imoji Dynasty.

With Lord Teikihyo defeated, Teihyo Kyodankai must march his forces back across the continent to face Ishikiro Imoji.

The Son of Gold

The Son of Gold is the third and final campaign in Patriam: The Sagas of War.

You play as Crown Prince Anathaen of Thenithria, the heir to the throne of Thenithria, and the brilliant strategist & commander at the head of the Thenithrian military.

Prince Anathaen is ordered by his aging father to sail across the sea to Senkaria with orders to defeat The Empire of Akaria, and sack their rich coastal cities dotted along the eastern coastline of Senkaria following Akaria's attempts to influence a rebellion of Southern Kallonian lords against the Thenithrian Kingdom.

Prince Anathaen leads a bloody campaign through the shifting sands of Akaria, laying siege to the Empire's bountiful citadels.

However, near the end of what would have been a triumphant and swift victory, Prince Anathaen receives orders from his father to abandon the Akarian campaign and instead swiftly sail north, where a large-scale rebellion has risen against Thenithrian rule across the realms of Northern Kallonia.

Dynamic Environments

Flooding Rivers

In Patriam: The Sagas of War, flooding rivers are a force to be reckoned with. Heavy rains can swell the waterways, washing out bridges and cutting off vital routes, forcing players to rethink their strategy on the fly.

Riverside settlements aren’t spared either. Floods can devastate these key locations, crippling resources and defensive positions. Players must adapt quickly, scouting for new paths and fortifying vulnerable points.

The ever-changing landscape ensures that no battle is predictable, with each shift in the environment creating new tactical challenges.

Muddy Fields

In Patriam: The Sagas of War, the battlefield itself can turn against you. Rain-soaked fields and farms can quickly turn to thick mud, slowing or even trapping heavy infantry and cavalry, leaving them exposed to swift skirmishers and deadly archers.

Inspired by the historical Battle of Agincourt, where mud played a crucial role in the downfall of heavily-armoured Frankish Knights, this mechanic encourages players to adapt their tactics.

What was once an advantage can become a liability, forcing players to think on their feet and both use the terrain to outmaneuver stronger foes while diversifying unit selection in order to be adaptable to any environmental challenge.

Thick Forests

In Patriam: The Sagas of War, thick forests pose a challenge for large, organised armies, slowing their advance and forcing them to rely on roads and passes. Meanwhile, agile guerilla forces can slip through the trees undetected, setting the stage for surprise attacks.

Some elite ranged units can take advantage of the forest canopy, positioning themselves in the treetops and lying in wait. As unsuspecting enemy troops pass below, these hidden archers spring their ambush, raining arrows from above and turning the forest into a deadly trap.

However, when no other routes are available, larger forces can resort to fire and deforestation to clear a path. This slow, destructive process not only threatens hidden troops, but also alters the environment; creating new challenges and opportunities as the forest burns away, leaving scorched earth in its wake.

Tall Foliage & Hidden Units

In Patriam: The Sagas of War, tall grass, dense foliage, and thick bushes offer the perfect cover for setting ambushes.

Players can hide their units in the landscape, waiting for the right moment to strike. This natural concealment favours skirmisher-style, hit-and-run tactics, letting smaller, more agile forces outmaneuver and harass larger armies.

With clever use of the terrain, players can turn the element of surprise into a decisive advantage, turning the battlefield into a deadly trap for unsuspecting enemies.
